Prepare for Back-to-School by Getting Your Home Organized

As the relaxing, laidback days of summer come to an end, our work schedule increases, our kids go back to school, and we resume our busy day-to-day routines. This is a transition that can be a challenge for both children and parents.

One of the best ways to lower back-to-school stress is to get organized. And being prepared is half the battle. That’s why we’ve created a list of organizational tips, so by the time September arrives you’re ready to go.

1. Create a schedule

First, make a list of all household responsibilities: grocery shopping, preparing meals, doing laundry and so on. Designate tasks for certain days to ensure everything is taken care of. The beauty of having a schedule is that it frees up space in your mind to focus on other things.

We also recommend starting a chore chart - doing dishes, taking out the trash, laundry, and other chores that need to be done around the house. Get everyone in the family involved, and find ways to make cleaning fun!

In the next few weeks, test out what works and what doesn’t so when school starts you have a solid system in place.

2. Declutter

As you look around your home, chances are there are many things you no longer use or need. Ask yourself: What supports my lifestyle? What do I really need?

Decluttering is a major undertaking, so we encourage you to do it mindfully. Take your time and go room by room, so you aren’t overwhelmed. Think of this as both a physical and emotional cleanse. A clean home and a clear mind go hand-in-hand.

3. Make storage containers and reusable sandwich bags your new best friends

Packing lunches shouldn’t be time-consuming. Save yourself the hassle by keeping the lunch snacks in nearby in storage containers (non-plastic, environmentally-friendly of course!) When you’re shopping, look for glass or stainless steel.

When it comes to sandwich bags, there are many reusable options to choose from. Did you know the average family goes through 500 plastic bags each year? And that’s just for lunch.

4. Have a designated school supply station

For many of us, the hectic morning rush is all too familiar. “Mom, Dad, I can’t find my [fill in the blank]! Nothing is worse than rushing around in the morning to help your kids look for markers, index cards or other supplies they need.

Do yourself a favor and create a school supply station in your house, so you’re more prepared and less stressed the next time you’re in this scenario.

5. Have a family calendar

This will help you synchronize your schedules and keep track of school functions, sports practices, and other events and activities. If you really want to take it up a notch, color-coding for each person is very helpful.

Are there any organizational tips and tricks that work for you? We’d love to hear from you!
